Ramble Establishes a Library
On Friday 20 March, a newly built Resource Room, principal’s office and a newly refurrbished library will be unveiled at the Ramble Primary School in Union Hill, St. Mary. Major General Robert Neish, Executive Director of Digicel Foundation, explained that the Resource Room was refurbished and upgraded as a part of the Digicel Foundation’s activity to stem the problem of illiteracy in Jamaica.
Ramble Primary, which has a population of 176 students, will use the refurbished and upgraded Resource Room as an intervention centre for grades 2 to 6 students that are experiencing learning difficulties, particularly with reading. “Getting this refurbished Resource Room and new Library is ideal, especially at this time, when we have limited resources. We will maximize on the technology that this Resource Centre brings so that we can better able meet the needs of our students”, noted Mr. Ervin Rose, Principal of the Ramble Primary School.
The academic staff at Ramble will also reap the benefits of this Resource Room and Library since it will be wired with internet connection. Mr. Rose further outlined that “teachers will use the internet to do a lot of research, to adequately prepare their lesson plans for the students. In addition, the computer programmes present in the Resource Room will be used as a support for teaching. According, to Eleen Rankine, Administrator of the Digicel Foundation “these programmes are very interactive and colourful. They are a far cry from the traditional ‘chalk and board’ methods used to appeal to students.”
This refurbished Resource Room is one of ten such projects that Digicel Foundation has embarked on over the past two years to help address the nation’s problem of illiteracy. These rooms usually come equipped with an AC unit, computers, printers, laptops, interactive white boards, DVD players, software such as Hooked on Phonics, Master Reader and School Success and Audio headsets. In total, the Digicel Foundation has spent JA$6M on the construciton and equipping of this multifaceted complex at Ramble Primary School.
