The Glenmuir High Unveiling

July 8th 2009 - The Glenmuir High School's recent unveiling of the Clement Radcliffe Resource Centre and Library

Glenmuir High School in Clarendon will officially open its two-storey Library and Resource room today Monday 22 June that is projected to benefit over 2100 students and community members in Clarendon. “It is interesting to see that we have completed this structure in time for our 50th anniversary, which will further assist us to provide better quality education and services, for our students, teachers and the wider Clarendon community,” noted Principal of the school, Mr. Clement Radcliffe.

The facility, which started construction in 2007, now hosts a Remedial Centre and Audio-Visual room, an internet café, a library and reading room and book rental facilities. Principal of the School, Mr. Clement Radcliffe signalled that the services of the centre will be extended to the wider Clarendon community.

Over 200 residents, mainly from the community of May Pen, who participate in evening classes funded by HEART/NTA and classes in Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) held at the Glenmuir High School will use the internet café and library for research purposes.

“We have a vibrant programme here and with the new Library and Resource room we have more space especially with the audio-visual room, that will allow us to incorporate more creative strategies into our teaching,” explained Vice-Principal of the school, Mrs. Monacia Williams.

The school’s sixth and first form population have been increasing dramatically over the past two years and now students will have more space to conduct research and read for academic related activities. In addition, all the over 1800 students enrolled at the school will be trained in the Resource Room to be computer literate.

The Digicel Foundation, who partnered to fund the project outlined that the Foundation was pleased to come on board because their vision is to have 100% literacy and numeracy in schools across the island. “We hope that the school will open the doors of the Resource Centre and library to other schools in the central region so that they can benefit from the facilities,” expressed Major General Robert Neish, Executive Director, Digicel Foundation. Lisa Lewis, Chairman of the Digicel Foundation, will deliver the keynote address under the theme: Fitting into the Global picture: Crossing the barriers of illiteracy – a challenge for all.

The $35M structure was completed in partnership with the NCB Foundation, the Ministry of Education E-Learning Project, the CHASE Fund, the ALCOA Foundation, the Cement Company Ltd, Shagory’s Ltd, Glenmuir Past Students’ Association and the Glenmuir High School.
